Aims:The aim of the course is to introduce students to the study of British culture. They gain a general chronological overview of historical and cultural periods and familiarize themselves with a selection of schools of thought and art, as well as with some of the most important works of art of each period, always in the context of general European trends.
Description:
Lectures: The content of the lectures is split into two forms. Compulsory reading from a textbook and pre-recorded videos (available on the e-learning server and YouTube) provide an overview of British history and cultural history. Face to face lectures cover the literary history of the British Isles and they directly complement the work which is done in the seminar.
Seminar: The seminar focuses on a selection of texts from British literature.Topics of online lectures:

Assigned Reading: BHfD 9–96.
An overview of the period ending in 1066 from the perspective of physical remains and artefacts.

Assigned Reading: BHfD 97–162.
A basic overview of the features of the Norman and Gothic styles.

Assigned Reading: BHfD 219–224.
An overview of the basic features and roots of Humanism and the Renaissance, as well as its typical features in art and architecture. Basic features of the sonnet form are also explained.

Assigned Reading: BHfD 163–217.
An introduction to British Renaissance theater, its social function and position, as well as to some of its most important names. At the end of the presentation, two poets of key importance (beyond those already mentioned amongst the playwrights) are also mentioned.

A discussion of the various negative reactions to the Renaissance, and how they have led to the Interregnum and the Restoration. The culture and public life in these periods is also discussed.
